When most people think energy efficient, they think green, right? Well, that isn’t always the case and especially with lightbulbs.
CFLs (compact fluorescent lightbulbs)
Nowadays, CFLs are common and becoming the standard of lighting in homes. For those that aren’t sure what CFLs are, they are the spiral shaped bulbs that are being made to replace the old incandescent lightbulbs of the past. Although more expensive than an incandescent bulb, a CFL can last up to 10 times as long and is 4 times more efficient. By only using a quarter of the energy for the same amount of light, these bulbs can lead to huge energy savings which in turn leads to extra moola in your pocket. Sounds great to me, the environment, and to most homeowners.
But, there is a downside. CFLs contain a small amount of mercury, a toxic metal that can cause adverse health effects. I’d say this a a pretty big downside. While the mercury is contained within the bulb, if you were to break one, you would be exposed to mercury. Also, if not disposed of properly, the bulb will end up in a landfill and the mercury would eventually creep back into our environment through rivers, streams, etc. and eventually into our food supply.
Fortunately, it is fairly easy to recycle them. Simply take them to your local Home Depot and they will take them for free. Or, even better, call HandyGreen Home Solutions LLC. We’ll recycled your CFLs for you. Call today for a free quote.
Overall, CFL lightbulbs are a good option for the environment when handled properly and recycled. But, there is a better option available – LED Lightbulbs.
